GIANT Earth Day In Little Island
Every year on April 22nd, more than a billion people celebrate Earth Day as a day of showing love to our planet Earth. This year we we had a full week of celebration at our Chelsea Hub during our Spring Camp, and celebrated with our community and partners at Little Island, Corlears School, and Poly Prep in Brooklyn.
Here we share with you how we celebrated Earth Day on Little Island. We planted seeds, up-cycled laser cut wooden pieces that were left behind as “trash” in our studio, wrote stories about nature, went on a treasure hunt around the Island, and documented our nature memories in our Little Island passports. You can download the passport and go on a creative adventure on Little Island any day! Or, get creative at home, build your own Little Island, plant seeds, and use trash to design incredible things!
We designed with trash
We prompted our participants to use “trash” and engineer incredible buildings inspired by the work of Arthur Huang, an architect, engineer, and trash and recycling expert. They up-cycled laser cut wooden pieces that were left behind as “trash” in our studio and made amazing structures bird houses and more:
We wrote stories about nature
Inspired by the work of Suzanne Simard, we prompted our participants to write stories about nature. Check out some of these amazing stories written by GIANT kids on Earth Day:
We planted seeds & made pollinator friends
We planted seeds in biodegradable bags using a simple method that doesn’t require any soil, and encouraged our participants to design their seeds’ home so when they sprout they feel welcome on our planet!
We made DIY Little Island Passports
We encouraged our participants to go around the Island and draw their favorite plants and flowers in their passports to collect GIANT Nature Friend cards.
For us every day counts as Earth Day. Download GIANT Little Island passport and go on a creative adventure with our family! Or, get creative at home, build your own Little Island, plant seeds, and use trash to design incredible things!
