The GIANT Room and Joan Ganz Cooney Center are partnering to administer three co-design workshops for a new literacy app!

This app is being created to improve literacy, therefore we are inviting children in grades K-2 who are multilingual learners and/or struggling readers to participate in three co-design sessions on April 21st, April 28th, and May 5th. Each session will be two hours and take place at The GIANT Room in the financial district in New York City. Participants must join all three sessions.

This program is completely free for children to participate. We are accepting a limited number of children in New York City to participate in the program. Families with children in grades K-2 are invited to apply. As a token of appreciation for your time, families will receive $75 if joining all three sessions. Multilingual and/or struggling readers are highly encouraged to apply.

The GIANT Room, an innovation lab for children and their families, is pleased to announce they are partnering with Lysol®, the #1 most trusted and pediatrician-recommended disinfecting brand in the US, to co-design a series of Science Kits for schools as part of their HERE for Healthy Schools initiative. Last year’s co-design sessions were a huge success and many of the ideas invented by the children in these sessions were used in the creations of these kits that were then used by thousands of schools across the country during the 2024-2025 school year. Now, we are, again, bringing together diverse groups of youth with researchers and industry innovators to put learning and wellbeing at the center of product development for these kits to be distributed in schools in the upcoming academic year. Families with students in either first or second grade are invited to apply.

Participation entails one child and their parent joining one workshop focused on co-designing and prototyping a series of science games, activities, and experiments with Lysol® and GIANT design teams. Kids who join will have a chance to learn and practice the art of giving and receiving feedback and then to join a prototyping exercise with industry innovators and researchers on either April 16th or 17th held in person at The GIANT Room in New York City, free of charge for families.
