Love Your Planet - When STEM Turns to SEL
With Valentine’s Day fast approaching, we are reminded to take the time to appreciate the important relationships in our lives. However, every week, one specific group of children shows their appreciation for a relationship that all living things have in common—our relationship with the planet.
In GIANT’s Love Your Planet after school program, students are given a prompt where they explore an aspect of nature or learn about ways to protect our environment.
Love Your Planet’s most recent project was about creating habitats for different animals. However, the children took the project above and beyond simply constructing the habitat. Each child brought their animal to life by giving them names and personalities — almost like their own characters.
This brought even more thought, detail, and care into each project—turning this STEM lesson about animal habitats into an SEL project.
This combination of STEM and SEL really encapsulates the heart of GIANT. If this project inspired you and warmed your heart, then we have some news for you! We’re offering a free online creative bootcamp where we will be making characters and creating Valentine’s Day postcards for our friends and loved ones!
