The GIANT AI Report
The fast-paced AI landscape may seem overwhelming, as we are constantly inundated with new developments and breaking news. The GIANT AI Report is here to break it down into digestible bite-sized pieces that are currently relevant to parenting and education.
In this edition, read about the UN’s first global resolution on AI, the push for Media Literacy, how seven teachers are using AI, and what Chat GPT is releasing as early as this summer.
UN Adopts First Global Artificial Intelligence Resolution
The United Nations General Assembly unanimously passed its first global resolution on artificial intelligence, urging nations to protect human rights, safeguard personal data, and monitor AI risks. Proposed by the United States and co-sponsored by China and over 120 other nations, the nonbinding resolution also calls for strengthening privacy policies. U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Linda Thomas-Greenfield highlighted the significance of the resolution, emphasizing that it represents a collective decision to govern AI rather than be governed by it.
AI Images and Conspiracy Theories are Driving a Push For Media Literacy Education
Videos, images, and text generated by artificial intelligence are increasingly prevalent in elections, online marketplaces like Amazon, and even in legal documents. Recognizing deepfakes and conspiracy theories online has become a crucial skill for students, as highlighted at the annual MisInfo Day event at the University of Washington. The demand for media literacy education is growing, with 18 states in the U.S. passing bills in support of it, indicating a broader recognition of the importance of these skills in today's digital age.
Teachers Are Using AI to Create New Worlds, Help Students with Homework, and Teach English
Teachers are grappling with the implications of AI tools like ChatGPT, raising questions including concerns about student cheating, and how they can actually utilize the technology. Despite being underrepresented as users of time-saving AI, educators are exploring the trustworthiness of AI in curriculum creation and the implications for student data privacy. In this article, seven teachers, worldwide, provide diverse perspectives on AI in education, highlighting the need for teachers to adapt to the evolving landscape shaped by AI tools.
Microsoft's First AI Surface PC: What Does It Offer?
Microsoft unveiled its latest Surface PCs, the Surface Pro 10 and Surface Laptop 6, designed specifically for AI applications in business. These new devices boast the fastest Surface PC experience yet, featuring a Copilot key for quick access to the company's AI assistant, improved video call capabilities, new accessories, and enhanced security features.
OpenAI’s Voice Cloning AI Model Only Needs a 15-second Sample to Work
OpenAI has introduced Voice Engine, a text-to-voice platform that generates synthetic voices from short 15-second audio clips, allowing for reading text prompts in multiple languages. The technology is being piloted by companies like Age of Learning and HeyGen for voice-over content and personalized student responses. OpenAI aims to use these trials to refine Voice Engine's capabilities and explore its ethical use across various industries. AI text-to-audio technology is advancing, with some companies focusing on voice generation, such as Podcastle and ElevenLabs. However, ethical concerns have prompted regulatory action, like the recent FCC ban on robocalls using AI voices, including one that impersonated President Joe Biden. OpenAI has proposed various measures to mitigate risks associated with such tools, including discontinuing voice-based authentication for bank account access, implementing policies to safeguard the use of individuals' voices in AI, enhancing education on AI deepfakes, and establishing tracking systems for AI-generated content.
GPT-5 Might Arrive this Summer As a “Materially Better” Update to ChatGPT
When OpenAI unveiled its GPT-4 AI model a year ago, it sparked excitement and anxiety over its human-like communication abilities. The looming question in AI circles has been the release date of GPT-5. According to Business Insider, GPT-5 is expected to debut this summer, with some enterprise customers already receiving demonstrations showcasing its improvements, including better AI agents. OpenAI has not confirmed the exact name or nature of the release but has hinted at significant enhancements over GPT-4. According to the report, OpenAI is still training GPT-5, and after that is complete, the model will undergo internal safety testing and further "red teaming" to identify and address any issues before its public release.
