The GIANT Room Featured in the Common Sense Media AI in K-12 Guide
Common Sense Media's just published their latest white paper, "Generative AI in K–12 Education: Challenges and Opportunities," which explores the complexities of AI adoption in education and highlights the growing need for AI literacy. Key opportunities include using AI for adaptive learning, teacher productivity, and system-wide improvements like data interoperability. The report emphasizes the need for clear guidelines and equity-driven AI implementation in schools.
As a prime example of the use of AI for Adaptive learning, the report features The Giant Room’s utilization of generative AI to scale creative learning programs for children; emphasizing AI as a collaborative tool rather than a replacement for teachers, while allowing kids to engage in open-ended creative tasks like designing post cards and writing and illustrating books based on their units of study. With AI, The GIANT Room’s programs have become more accessible and interactive, fostering collaboration, feedback, and critical thinking. Partnering with NYC schools, teachers have seen increased student engagement and completion rates. The GIANT Room has also developed a guide, in partnership with the New York City Department of Education, to help teachers integrate AI tools into classroom projects, focusing on creativity and group collaboration.
