GIANT Around The World: Meet Kevin Muriuki

Diverse teams are more creative and more empathetic. Working with teammates from different cultures and backgrounds with diverse life experiences and values help us to be more open to exploring new possibilities, to better see the world from others’ points of views, and to come up with more original ideas.

There is another reason why at The GIANT Room we take pride in having a very diverse team, joined together from more than 20 countries! We have made a promise to ourselves to empower kids to come up with GIANT ideas and to help them build on their ideas! Kids’ interests and passions are diverse, and so should be their GIANT mentors. Our team has a very impressive collective set of skills and expertise so we can match GIANT kids to the group of mentors with aligned interests and passions to guide them along their creative journey.

In a new series, GIANT Around the World, we are spotlighting our instructors by highlighting where they are coming from and what’s special about their cities. First in the series is Kevin Muriuki, who is the mastermind behind this amazing series. Read along and enjoy learning about Kevin and his beautiful city of Mombasa in Kenya, Africa.

My name is Kevin Muriuki, and I am a creative tech resident at the Giant Room. I live in Mombasa city, Kenya. A lush, beautiful coastal town. Well, it’s sort of like an Island. As you come into the town, you will use a bridge, and it gives you a lovely view of the ocean. Mombasa town is ancient. It is one of the most iconic tourist destinations in Kenya. Mainly for the friendly folks, delicious Arabic (Swahili) food, and tourist attractions.

From the moment you step into town, you get that air of antiquities laid out. The buildings have it, and with some modern touches implemented by the outgoing governor. It all adds to the appeal. Here is a look at some of the intricate touches installed to make the town look a bit more modern.

Mombasa is a friendly environment, having been a tourist destination for a long time. Locals are used to interacting with foreigners. This allows one to navigate the environment. You will find some delightful spots to eat, shop, and get some souvenirs. Pro-tip, if you are new in Mombasa, please look for a local to help you, else you might end up being hustled. This happened to me the first time I travelled to the town by myself. A cab guy drove me around a roundabout after making me feel like where I was going was very far. Turns out it was only a few meters away.

But, one bad egg can’t ruin the experience. Mombasa also offers a lot of beautiful beaches. You can step into various beachside resorts and enjoy their private beaches. If I am being completely honest, if you have a lot going on in your mind, you could take a walk along the beach. A view of the ocean allows you to clear your mind and drift off in the swaying waves. You could also take a dip to wash those sorrows away. At The Giant Room, we are a blend of diverse cultures and people from all around the world. I enjoy working in an open, inclusive environment. Taking you around my hometown was fun. I look forward to seeing other places where “GIANTs” live.
