The GIANT Room + Lysol® - A Very Special Media Event
In case you missed it, The GIANT Room has had the pleasure of working with Lysol® on developing their Minilabs Science Kits as part of Lysol’s HERE for Healthy Schools program!
The HERE for Healthy Schools program is intended to reduce school absenteeism through creating hands-on activities that are fun and engaging while teaching the science of germs, and better hygiene behaviors. Designed for grades 1 to 2, these kits are curated to educate students about the science of germs and encourage healthy hygiene habits. Each selected classroom will receive a total of three Lysol® Minilabs Science Kits throughout the school year. Each kit includes hands-on materials for the whole classroom, engaging lesson plans aligned with NGSS Standards, and resources for teachers for easy and effective implementation.
The GIANT Room hosted several co-design sessions, inviting teachers and families to take a look at the ideas and prototypes for these Minilabs Science Kits and provide feedback. Based on this feedback, GIANT designed several activities and comics to be included in the kits.
Then we got to the REALLY fun part! GIANT and Lysol® hosted a media event to announce the Minilabs Science Kits. The event also doubled as a third co-design session with families, and it included a very special guest…actor and comedian Keegan-Michael Key!
Here are some of the fun ideas they came up with:
A ship to deliver cats to hospital.
A robot with spots that suck up the germs.
A potion that smells and tastes like cheese to trap mice — based on the hypothesis that mice are the source of the disease.
A paw-washing station for the cats with a contraption at the bottom of the drain that traps germs, puts them into a rocket, and sends them off into space, far away from Gubby Pubs. There are cat toys attached to the paw-washing station to attract the cats.
A spray that kills ticks — based on the hypothesis that ticks are causing the disease.
Medicine potion for the cats in the form of a cat food popsicle.
After the invention prompt, the children began a new fun activity centered on hand-washing. The CDC recommends that everyone wash their hands for at least 20 seconds in order to completely rid your hands of germs. With this in mind, the challenge was to create a sand timer that would stop right at 20 seconds. Whoever was able to get their timer to end exactly at 20 seconds would be the winner!
Participants also each created their own “Microbe ID Card,” another activity that will be incorporated into the Minilabs Science Kits!
Each participant also received a few take-home activities to test out!
All in all, it was a very fun AND health-conscious event! Thank you so much to Lysol® and all of our participants for creating with us!
